DID YOU KNOW?
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world. The bee hummingbird is the tiniest, measuring about 2 inches (5 cm) and weighing less than a nickel.
They can flap their wings 50 to 80 times per second, and during flight, their heart rate can soar to 1,200 beats per minute.
Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backward. They can also hover in mid-air and even fly upside down.
Due to their high energy use, hummingbirds need to eat constantly, feeding on nectar, insects, and spiders. They consume up to twice their body weight in food each day.
Some hummingbirds, like the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, migrate thousands of miles. They travel alone and can fly non-stop for up to 18 hours over the Gulf of Mexico.
Despite their tiny size and high energy expenditure, some hummingbirds can live up to 5-10 years in the wild.
